Description

Ice, Fishin’, & Fights is a top-down tile-based puzzle game for mobile devices in which players must surpass mind-boggling puzzles in order to reach their next meal!

This project was made in a course dedicated to Mobile Game Development, in which students had to not only design and implement a new game, but also learn how to make it playable on Android devices. It was also required that we create an interactive tutorial for the project.

Team Size: 1
Project Duration: 7 weeks

Role

I handled all of the coding, art, and in-engine work for this project. This includes:

  • Puzzle Design

  • Implementing the touch controls

  • Enemy Design

  • Simple enemy AI / behavior

  • Creating the art and animations

  • Porting to Android

Experience

Prior to this project, I had never designed a mobile game. I also had not had any experience designing this kind of grid based puzzle game either, despite having a deep love for these types of games (Baba is You and Stephen's Sausage Roll being two of my favorites). So going into this project I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

Thankfully, working on this project really opened my eyes to how much I can enjoy creating handheld projects. I have always enjoyed the ease of access that mobile games have, and being able to play something that I had created on an Android device gave a great feeling of satisfaction. I have to imagine that it was a mini version of what it must feel like to work on a console release.

This taught me that I would really like the opportunity to work on more Mobile projects in the future.
